Question

To an evacuated vessel with movable piston under external pressure of 1 atm,0.1 mole of He and 1.0 mole of unknown compound (vapour pressure 0.68 atm at 0C) are introduced. Considering the ideal gas behaviour, the total volume (in litre) of the gases at 0C is close to

Solution

Let volume of vessel =V L
In the vapour of compound,
PV=ngRT
0.68×V=ng×0.082×273
Total pressure = External pressure,
1×V=(ng+nHe)×0.082×273
Dividing eqn. (ii) by eqn. (i),
10.68=ng+nHeng
ng=0.68ng+0.68nHe
=0.68ng+0.68×0.1
0.32ng=0.068
ng=0.2125
From eqn. (ii),
V=(0.2125+0.1)×0.082×273
=6.99=7 L.
