A slip-ring commutator simply establishes a relationship or contact between the rotating rotor and the immovable stator, but a split-ring commutator causes the current to shift directions every alternative half-rotation.
Because the current direction switches every half-rotation and the split ring commutator reversed the current trajectory for each alternate half revolution, it basically turns the present state to positive throughout every half-cycle.
The rotor coil is connected to the split ring commutator (armature).
