Ice extracts heat from bottles , and changes its state from ice (solid) to water (liquid) , and heat gained by the unit mass of a substance to convert itself from solid to liquid state is called latent heat of melting . The latent heat of melting of ice is 80cal.g1 or 80×4.2=336J , therefore each 1 gram of ice extracts 336J of heat from the bottles to keep them cool.
