Finding the red and blue paint should be used:
Given that to mix a particular shade of purple paint, red paint and blue paint are mixed in the ratio $5 : 3$ .
Let the red paint are mixed be $5 x$ and blue paint are mixed be $3 x$
Total paint $= 20$ gallons
Amount of red paint used $= \frac{5 x}{5 x + 3 x} \times 20$
$= \frac{5}{8} \times 20 = 12.5 gallons$
Amount of blue paint used $= \frac{3 x}{5 x + 3 x} \times 20$
$= \frac{3}{8} \times 20 = 7.5 gallons$
Hence, the amount of red and blue paint used to make shade of purple paint of $20 gallons$ is $12.5 gallons and 7.5 gallons$ .
