Question

To reduce the light reflected by the glass surface of a camera lens, the surface is coated with a thin layer of another material which has an index of refraction (μ=7/4) smaller than that of glass. The least thickness of the layer, to ensure that light falling perpendicularly on the surface and having wavelengths, λ1 = 700 nm and λ2 = 420 nm will be weekly reflected for both wavelengths is 107m. Find x ?

Solution

2μd=(2n1)λ2 (n = 1,2,3, .......)
d=(2n1)λ4μ
For light of wavelength λ1= 700 nm
d1=7004μ,21004μ,35004μ
for light of wavelength λ2= 420 nm
d2=4204μ,12604μ,21004μ
dmin=21004μ=21004×47
dmin=300nm=3×107m
