Question

To reduce the light reflected by the glass surface of a camera lens, the surface is coated with a thin layer of another material which has an index of refraction (μ=7/4) smaller than that of glass. he least thickness of the layer, to ensure that light falling perpendicularly on the surface and having wavelengths, λ1=700nm and λ2=420nm will be weekly reflected for both wavelengths isx×107m. Find x?

Solution

2μd=(2n1)λ2 (n=1,2,3,.....)

d=(2n1)λ4μ

For light of wavelength λ1=700nm

d1=7004μ,21004μ,35004μ

for light of wavelength λ2=420nm

d2=4204μ,12604μ,21004μ

dmin=21004μ

=21004×74

dmin=300nm=3×107m
