Question

To verify the law of conservation of mass in a chemical reaction a student takes a known amount of solution of barium chloride in a small test tube which is hanged in a sealed conical flask, containing the solution of Na2SO4. The flask is slightly tilted so that the two solutions get mixed with each other and a chemical reaction occurs. What is the relation between the masses of the chemicals involved?

Solution

In this reaction a white coloured precipitate of Barium Sulphate is formed and also the other product formed is sodium chloride. This reaction can either be called a precipitation reaction or Double displacement reaction.

BaCl2(aq)+Na2SO4(aq)2NaCl(aq)+BaSO4(ppt)

In the above reaction, the same number of elements and same elements are present on the reactant and product side, hence the mass of the reactions is not altered. The of mss is conserved
