Question

To what excited state an unexcited election of hydrogen should reach when it bombarded with 10.2electron volt energy.?

Open in App
Solution

Bohr's energy for a state = 13.6/n^(2) eV

In innermost shell, energy is 13.6/1^(2) = 13.6 eV

When 10.2 eV energy is given, Difference in energy = 13.6 - 10.2 = 3.4 eV

So the energy of the level electron escapes to, should be 3.4 eV.

Thus, 3.4 = 13.6/n^(2)
n = √(13.6/3.4)
n = 2.0

Thus the electron reaches second shell or first excited state.
