Question

To what extent has the status of women improved in India?

Open in App
Solution

Women has been the victim of many social evils and atrocities in the Indian society since age old time. But, situation has improved after independence where women are provided facilities and provisions for education, health and employment. The number of educated and professional women are increasing subsequently. Laws to eradicate social evils like child marriage and dowry are being initiated. Many programmes and policies for the health of women and girl child are taken by the government. Political rights and empowerment has been provided for the upliftment of women.

But, inspite of all these, women are still facing atrocities in society and are becoming the victims of sexual harassment, rape and dowry. They still face bias and are considered as inferior to men. Household chores are still earmarked for girls especially in rural areas. Child marriage and dowry deaths are also taking place.

Unless, the mindset of both men and women change, the improvement of women in Indian society is keen.
