Question

Tollen's reagent is used for the detection of aldehydes. When a solution of AgNO3 is added to glucose with NH4OH, then gluconic acid is formed.
Ag++eAg; Eored=0.80 V
C6H12O6+H2OC6H12O7+2H++2e; Eooxi=0.05 V
Ag(NH3)+2+eAg(s)+2NH3; Eored=0.337 V
(Take:2.303×RTF=0.06 at 298 K)

When ammonia is added to the solution, pH is raised to 11. Which half-cell reaction is affected by pH and by how much?

Eooxi will increase by a factor of 0.66 from Eooxi

Solution

The correct option is C Eored will increase by a factor of 0.66 from Eored
In second half cell reaction;
C6H12O6+H2OC6H12O7+2H++2e; Eooxi=0.05 V
On increasing concentration of NH3, the concentration of H+ ion decreases, therefore,
Ered=Eored0.062 log [H+]2
Ered=00.062 ×2 log 1011=0.66 V
i.e., Ered increases by 0.66 V
