Question

Total energy of an electron orbiting around the nucleus of an atom is always negative. What is the significance of this?

Solution

The negative sign shows that the electron is attracted towards the nucleus by electrostatic force and to remove the electron energy must be supplied. The energy needed to remove the electron in the first orbit is +13.6 eV and this is called ionising energy of hydrogen.
