The endodermis in Selaginella except in xerophytic species (S. lepidophylla and S. rupestris) is interrupted by large intercellular spaces. This is called the trabeculated endodermis. Transverse section of stem shows that endodermis is represented by a few radially elongated cells known as trabeculae. These cells possess Casparian bands on the radial walls. Between trabeculae, intercellular spaces are present.
