DNA gets transcribed into mRNA within the nucleus. The mRNA gets processed, and moves out through the nuclear pores into the cytoplasm to get attached to the ribosomes for protein synthesis. In eukaryotes, the endoplasmic reticulum lies right outside the nucleus, and its membrane is in fact, continuous with the outer nuclear membrane.
