Question

Transform the polar equation to cartesian equation.
rcosθ=a.

Open in App
Solution

Given the polar equation,
rcosθ=a
Now squaring both sides we get,
rcos2θ=a
Now multiplying both sides with r we get,
r2cos2θ=ar
or, (rcosθ)=ax2+y2
or, x2=ax2+y2. [ Since x=rcosθ and r=x2+y2]
This is the required transformed cartesian equation.
