Transgenic crops are modified through genetic engineering to develop natural resistance to insect pests. Which of the following are transgenic plants?
Insect resistant transgenic plants contain either a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis or some other hybrid gene. In Bt cotton the insect resistant gene is transferred from Bacillus thuringiensis. In tobacco, the gene silencing method is applied using RNAi. A gene is added into the genome of tobacco that creates complimentary RNA for the mRNA of nematodes, the parasite of tobacco plants. Both these methods confer pest resistance to these plants making them prime examples of transgenic plants.
