Question

Transgenic plants are developed by?

Open in App
Solution

Transgenic plants:

  1. Transgenic plants are created by introducing foreign genes into the plant genome.
  2. This is a genetic engineering process in which genes from other species are inserted into the plant genome.
  3. The alien gene is referred to as transgenic.

Development of transgenic plants:

  1. The goal of creating a transgenic plant is to create a species with optimum features, such as high production and quality.
  2. The goal of introducing a foreign gene is to gain benefits such as enhanced shelf life, higher yield, resistance to extreme heat and cold, and so on.

There are two approaches to introducing genes:

  • Agrobacterium tumefaciens transformation technique
  1. In order to do genetic engineering, the bacteria are infected with a Ti plasmid with desired genes.
  2. The Ti plasmid is a cancer-causing circular plasmid that transfers host chromosomes to plants and is also responsible for swelling.
  • Biolistic gun particle approach
  1. The target gene is coated in a gold or tungsten particle and battered into plant cells using this method.
  2. After being blasted, the sequence is absorbed into plant cells, which may then be multiplied using tissue culture procedures.
