Question

Transition elements show high melting points. Why?

Open in App
Solution

The general electronic configuration of transition elements is (n1)d110ns02

In transition metals, in addition to 𝑛𝑠 electrons, (n1)d electrons also participate in interatomic metallic bonding. This results in stronger metallic bonds which keep the atoms closely packed.

That’s why transition elements have high melting points.
