Question

Translate the following statement into chemical equation and then balance it:

Hydrogen sulphide gas burns in air to give water and sulphur dioxide.

Solution

The chemical equation for the given chemical reaction is:
H2S(g)+O2(g)H2O(l)+SO2(g)

The number of oxygen atoms on the reactant and product side is not balanced. So we need to add a coefficient 3 before O2 in the reactant side and 2 before H2O and SO2 in the product side.
Therefore the equation becomes:
H2S (g)+3O2(g)2H2O (l)+2SO2(g)

In order to balance the number of sulphur atoms, add a coefficient 2 before H2S in the reactant side.
The balanced chemical equation is:
2H2S (g)+3O2(g)2H2O (l)+2SO2(g)
