Solution

Balanced chemical equation

  • Chemical reactions, in which reactants combine to form products, are represented by chemical equations.
  • Stoichiometric coefficients are added to the reactants and products to balance chemical equations.
  • It's significant because the principles of mass conservation and constant proportions require a chemical equation to be applied.
  • When the law of conservation of mass is applied to a chemical, neither an atom is generated nor destroyed on either side of the reaction, resulting in an equal number of elements in both the reactant and the product.

Chemical reaction

  • Burning hydrogen sulfide gas H2S in air produces Sulfur dioxide SO2 and water H2O.
  • The chemical equation is as follows:

H2Sg+O2gSO2g+H2Ol

Balancing the chemical equation

  • The number of Hydrogen H, Sulfur S atoms are equal on both sides but, Oxygen O atom on both sides are not equal.
  • Add 3 to oxygen on the reactant side.
  • Add 2 before H2O and SO2 on the product side.
  • Add 2 in front of H2S on the reactant side.
  • The balanced equation is as follows:

2H2Sg+3O2g2SO2g+2H2Ol
