• Trichinosis is a parasitic disease caused by roundworms of the Trichinella type. The Trichinella worm spreads to other animals or humans when they eat undercooked or raw infected meat. In humans, it is most often undercooked infected pork that causes persons to become ill with trichinosis.
• (1)The life cycle of trichina worm begins when meat (usually muscle) containing viable larvae encased inside a cyst wall, known as a “nurse cell”, is eaten. (2) Gastric acid and pepsin inside the stomach dissolve the cyst wall, releasing the larvae. The larvae grow and reproduce in the host’s small intestine. (3) They attach to and penetrate the mucosa of the duodenum(part of the intestine) at the base of the villi. After 30-36 hours they mature and perform copulation, after which the males die.
