Solution

The correct option is D Somatic hybridization
Somatic hybridization is the process of fusion of protoplasts of two varieties or species. A hybrid produced by the fusion of somatic cells of two varieties or species is called somatic hybrid. The plant cells lacking cell walls are called protoplasts.

In this method first the cell wall of the cells of selected parents are digested with a combination of enzymes like pectinase and cellulase. Fusion between the obtained protoplasts is induced by a solution of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or by a very high voltage electric current. The fusion of protoplasts involve the fusion of both cytoplasm and nuclei. Later the fused protoplasts are allowed to grow on a culture medium. Soon they regenerate the cell wall and begin to divide to ultimately produce plantlets.

Somatic hybridization gives the ability to combine parent genes in higher plants belongs to different species or genera.

It helps to overcome the sexual incompatibility persist among different plant species or genera. Example is Triticale.

Triticale is a somatic hybrid between tetraploid (4n) Triticum (wheat) species and diploid (2n) species of Secale (rye).

Cross pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower in either the same plant or different plant. Cross pollination occurs within plants that belong to same species.

Genetic engineering is the manipulation of one or more genes to change the genetic makeup of an organism for the benefit of mankind.

Sexual reproduction is a biparental type of reproduction that involves the production and fusion of male and female gametes to produce a diploid zygote.
