Question

Tritium, T (an isotope of H) combines with fluorine to form weak acid TF, which ionizes to give T+. Tritium is radioactive and is a βemitter. A freshly prepared aqueous solution of TF has pT (equivalent of pH) of 1.5 and freezes at 0.372C. If 600 mL of freshly prepared solution were allotted to stand for 24.8 years.
If ionization constant of TF is Ka=7.3×10x, value of x is:
(Given Kf for water =1.86 kg mol K1,t1/2 for tritium =12.4 years).

Solution

PT=1.5[T+]=101.5=0.0316=Cα
0.372=(1.86)(C)(1+α)
C+Cα=0.2
C=0.1684 α=0.1876
Kα=Cα21α=0.1684(0.1876)210.1876=7.3×103
Value of x=3.
