Stars twinkle because of atmospheric refraction. Light coming from stars travel through vaccum of outer space and as they enter earth they refract due to density of earth's atmosphere. Due to this refraction, the light appears to be coming from scattered sources which gives the twinkling effect to the stars and they appear to be twinkling.
