Question

Two 1st order reactions having same reactant concentrations proceed at 25oC at the same rate. The temperature coefficient of the rate of the first is 2 and that of second reaction is 3. Find the ratio of the rates of these reactions at 75oC:

Open in App
Solution

For the first-order reaction,
R=k[C]1

The effect of temperature on reaction rate can be expressed with temperature coefficient.

Temperature coefficient is the ratio of the rate of reaction/rate constant at two different temperature differing by 10oC.
Temperature coefficient (T.C.)=Kt+10Kt

R1R2=K1K2= Temperature coefficient

Let consider temperature co-efficient be 'a'

R35R25=a

R45R35=a

R45R35×R35R25=a×R35R25

R45R25=a×a=a2

Similarly,
R75R25=a5

For the 1st reaction,
(R75)1=25×(R25)1
For the 2nd reaction,
(R75)2=35×(R25)2
(R75)II(R75)I=3525=7.59[(R25)1=(R25)2]
