Question

Two acids H2SO4 and H3PO4 are neutralized separately by the same amount of an alkali when sulphate and dihydrogen phosphates are formed respectively.Find the ratio of the masses of H2SO4 and H3PO4

Open in App
Solution

H2SO4+2NaOHNa2SO4+2H2O
H3PO4+NaOHNaH2PO4+H2O
Equivalent of alkali=1g equivalent of H2SO4=1g equivalent of H3PO4
Two acids should react in their equivalent mass.
Equivalent mass of H2SO4=2+32+642
=982=49
Equivalent mass of H3PO4=3+31+641
=981=98
ratio of equivalent masses
=49:98
=1:2
