Question

Two arms of a U tube have unequal diameters d1=1.0mm and d2=1.0cm. If water (surface tension 7×102/m) is poured into the tube held in the vertical position, the difference of level of water in the U tube is x2cm. Find x Assume the angle of contact to be zero.

Solution

Rise of water is capillary is H1=4Tρgd1
so ΔH=H1H2=4Tρg[1d11d2]
on putting values is SI unit ,d1=103m ,d2=102m
we get ΔH=2.5×102m or 2.5 cm
so x2=2.cmx=5cm
