Question

Two balls of mass 3 kg and 6 kg are moving towards each other with velocities 6 m/s and 3 m/s respectively on a frictionless surface. After colliding, the 3 kg ball returns with velocity 3 m/s. Velocity of 6 kg ball (after collision) and coefficient of restitution are respectively:

Solution

The correct option is A 1.5 m/s, 0.5

If u1=6 m/s,u2=3 m/s
(taking rightward +ve)
After collision, velocity of 3 kg ball =v1=3 m/s
Let velocity of 6 kg ball =v2(say)

Applying linear momentum conservation,
m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2
3×6+6×(3)=3×(3)+6v2
0=9+6v2
v2=96=32=1.5 m/s
and e=VseparationVapproach=31.536=12
