Let v be the common velocity at the time of maximum deformation.
Applying linear momentum conservation principle (taking rightward +ve):
(m1+m2)v=m1v1+m2v2
(2+4)v=2×(4)+4×(2)=0
v=0
Impulse of reformation:
JR= change in momentum of any body during reformation
JR=m2(v2v)=4(20)=8 N-s
