Linear momentum is conserved for the system
Let v be the common velocity during maximum deformation.
Applying linear momentum conservation equation :
m1u1+m2u2=(m1+m2)v
v=(m1u1+m2u2)(m1+m2)=2×4+4×(2)2+4
v=0 m/s

Impulse of deformation
JD= change in momentum of any one body during deformation
For 4 kg,JD=m2(vu2)
=4(0(2))=8 N-s
