Question

Two beams A and B of plane polarized light with mutually perpendicular planes of polarization are through a polaroid. From the position when the beam A has maximum intensity (and beam B has zero intensity), a rotation of polaroid through 30 makes the two beams appear equally bright. If the initial intensities is of the two beams are IA and IB respectively, then IAIB is equal to,

Solution

The correct option is B 13
According to Malu's law,
I=I0 cos2θ

For first arrangement, the beam A has maximum intensity and beam B has zero intensity. So, θ(A1)=0, θ(B1)=90

After 30 rotation, θ(A2)=30, θ(B2)=60

I1=IA cos230

and I2=IB cos260

Since, both the beams have equal intensities in second arrangement, we can write, I1=I2

IAcos230=IBcos260IAIB=13

Hence, (D) is the correct answer.
