Let v1 be the velocity acquired by A and B.

According to the law of conservation of momentum,

mv=mv1+mv1 or v1=v2

According to law of conservation of energy,

12mv2=12mv21+12mv21+12kx2,

where x is the compression.

mv2=mv24+mv24+kx2x=vm2k

At maximum compression, KE of the AB system will be,

12mv21+12mv21=mv21=mv24
