Question

Two blocks A(5 kg) and B(2 kg) attached to the ends of a spring of spring constant 1120 N/m are placed on a smooth horizontal plane with spring undeformed. Simultaneously velocities of 3 m/s and 10 m/s along the line of the spring in the same direction are imparted to A and B then

Solution

The correct options are
A the amplitude of oscillation of 5 kg block is 0.18 m
B the first maximum compression occurs after start at 3π56 s
C the maximum extension of the spring is 0.50 m
By momentum conservation,
5×3+10×2=7v
v=5 m/s
By energy conservation,
12×5×32+12×2×102=12×7×52+12×k×x2
which gives x=0.25 m

Time period of oscillation, T=2πμk
Here, μ=m1m2m1+m2=107

T=π14
First compression occurs = 3T4=3π56 s
