Two blocks are placed on a smooth horizontal surface and connected by a string pulley arrangement as shown. If a force F starts acting on block m1, then find the relation between acceleration of both masses and their values.

Solution
From top to bottom, let us assume that the lengths of the strings are l1,l2,l3,l4
Therefore the total length is l1+l2+l3+l4=l.
After movement, lengths be l1−y,l2−y+x,l3−y+xandl4−y+x
So the total length will be l1−y+l2−y+x+l3−y+x+l4−y+x
Since l1+l2+l3+l4=l, we find that y=3x/4
Therefore if a1 and a2 are the accelerations, then a1 = d2xdt2 and a2=d2ydt2
So the relationship is a1a2=34
Therefore, since acceleration of COM = F(m1+m2),
we can say that a1=F(m1+(3m2/4)) and a2=3F(4m1+3m2)
