Question

Two blocks each of mass m are connected as shown in figure. Pulleys are smooth and light. The coefficient of static friction at all surfaces is μs. If inclination θ is increased gradually, 'θ' at which the blocks begin to slide is given by θ=tan1(10μsP). Find the value of P.

Solution

Since the friction force between the inclined plane and B is more than that between A and B, A will slide down, while B will slide up the plane.

mg sin θTμsmg cosθ=0
T=mg sin θμsmg cos θ
2T=mg sin θ+3μsmg cos θ
2(mg sin θμsmg cosθ)=mg sinθ+3μsmgcosθ
mg sin θ=5μsmg cosθ
tan θ=5μs
θ=tan1(5μs)
