Question

Two blocks of masses 1 kg and 2 kg are connected by a metal wire going over a smoother pulley as shown in figure. The breaking stress of the metal is 2×109 N/m2. What would be the minimum radius (in μm) of the wire used if it is not to break? Take g=10 m/s2.

Solution

Draw a free body diagram of given problem

Calculate tension in the wire

Let tension in the wire be T,
20T=2a (i)
T20=a (ii)
Therefore, on solving both equations we get
20TT10=2
20T=2T20
T=403 N

Calculate area of cross section of the wire

Formula used: σ=TA
As we know,
stress,σ=TA
2×109=40/3A
A=203×109m2

Calculate minimum radius of the wire

Let r be the radius of the wire, and area will be equal to πr2 Therefore,
πr2=20×109/3
r=(20×1093×3.14)12
=0.46×104 m=46μm
