Two blocks A and B of mass M and 2M respectively are hanging from a ceiling by means of a light spring and a light string as shown in figure.
If string between the blocks is suddenly cut, then accelerations of block A and B will be:

Solution
The correct option is CaA=2gupwards , aB=gdownwards At equilibrium :
From F.B.D of both blocks,
⇒T=2Mg..........(1)
FS=T+Mg................(2)
Here FS is the spring force on block A,
On adding Eq. (1) and (2) we have :
⇒FS=3Mg
When string is cut, the only external force acting on block B is its weight
So, aB=2Mg2M=gdownwards
F.B.D of A after string is cut :
Spring force doesn't change instantly after string is cut.
Since FS>Mg, block A will move upwards.
⇒aB=FS−MgM=3Mg−MgM
∴aA=2gupwards
Why this question?Always be cautious that due to inertialproperties the spring force do not changeinstantly, even if some forces disappear orextension at that instant.
