Question

Two blocks A and B of mass M and 2M respectively are hanging from a ceiling by means of a light spring and a light string as shown in figure.

Solution

The correct option is C aA= 2g upwards , aB = g downwards
At equilibrium :

From F.B.D of both blocks,

T = 2Mg..........(1)

FS = T + Mg................(2)

Here FS is the spring force on block A,

On adding Eq. (1) and (2) we have :

FS =3 Mg

When string is cut, the only external force acting on block B is its weight

So, aB = 2Mg2M = g downwards

F.B.D of A after string is cut :

Spring force doesn't change instantly after string is cut.

Since FS > Mg, block A will move upwards.

aB = FS MgM = 3MgMgM

aA = 2g upwards

Why this question?Always be cautious that due to inertialproperties the spring force do not changeinstantly, even if some forces disappear orextension at that instant.
