Question

Two bodies of metal are mounted on glass stands. Their surface area is equal but one is a sphere and other is pear shaped. Both are given the same amount of charge. Which one will lose its charge first?

Open in App
Solution

The pear shaped will loose charge faster.

As the sphere encloses more volume ( out of all shapes having same surface area a sphere encloses largest volume)
so sphere has less charge density ( as density is inversely proportional to volume)
and pear shaped body has more charge density
Always the body having more charge density will discharge earlier. .
Therefore pear shaped body will discharge faster.
