The correct option is D -8.5 J
Initial position of the ball with respect to the ground,
hi = 50 + (20×8) = 210 cm = 2.1 m

Final position of the ball with respect to the ground, hf=Level of the third step above the ground
hf = (20×2) = 40 cm = 0.4 m

Change in potential energy, ΔP.E.= mghfmghi = mg(hfhi)

ΔP.E. = 0.5×10×(0.42.1) JΔP.E. =8.5 J
