Question

Two capacitors of capacitances C1 and C2 such that C1=2C2 are connected in turn (i) in series and (ii) in parallel across the same battery. In which of the two capacitors will the (i) energy stored and (ii) charge acquired be more. Justify

Solution

Dear Student,

The effective capacitance of the capacitor will be more when the capacitors are connected in parallel.

The energy stored in the capacitor is given as, E=12CV2
From the above relation we can see that the energy stored in the combination is more when the capacitors are connected in parallel.

Change on the capacitor is given as, Q=CV

From the above relation we can see that the change stored in the combination is more when the capacitors are connected in parallel.
