Question

Two cars initially at rest are free to move in the x direction. Car A has mass 4kg and car B has mass 2kg. They are tied together, compressing a spring in between them. When the spring holding them together is burned, car A moves off with a speed of 2m/s. With what speed(in m/s) does car B leave?

Solution

Force on both cars due to spring would be the same. Therefore if the acceleration of car A is an at any instant due to spring.then the acceleration of car B would be 2a (a=F/m and mass of A=2 x mass of B). Therefore the speed of car B would be twice that of car A.
Hence the speed of car B is 4m/s
