Question

Two cars C1 and C2 moving in the same direction on a straight single lane road with velocities 12 m/s and 10 m/s respectively. When the separation between the two was 200 m, C1 started decelerating to avoid the collision. What is the minimum retardation of car C1 so that they don't collide?

Solution

The correct option is B 1 cm/s2

Acceleration of car 1 w.r.t car 2,
a12=a1a2=aC1aC2=0a=a

u12=u1u2=1210=2 m/s

The collision is just avoided if relative velocity becomes zero just at the moment the two cars meet each other.
i.e v12=0 when s12=200

Now, v12=0,u12=2,a12=a and s12=200
Using 3rd equation of motion,
v212u212=2as12
0222=2a×200
a=1100=0.01 m/s2=1 cm/s2

Minimum retardation needed by car C1=1 cm/s2
