Question

Two cells of emf 4 V and 2 V and internal resistance 2 Ω and 1 Ω respectively are connected in parallel so as to send the current in the same direction through an external resistance of 10 Ω. Find the potential difference across 10 Ω resistor.

Open in App
Solution

Equivalent internal resistance of parallel connection req=r1r2r1+r2
req=1×21+2=23Ω
Equivalent emf of cells in parallel connection Eeq=[E1r1+E2r2]req
Eeq=[21+42]×23=83 V
Potential difference across 10Ω resistor, E=RR+reqEeq
E=1010+23×83=2.5V
