Question

Two circles which are not congruent touch externally. The sum of their areas is 130π cm2 and the distance between the centres is 14 cm. Find the radii of the circles.

Solution

The circles touch externally at point P.
The distance between their centres is OO'.
Suppose that the radius of the first circle is r1 and the radius of the second circle is r2
Then OO' = 14 cm
OP + O'P =14 cm
r1 + r2 = 14 cm
r2=14-r1 ....(i)
Now, sum of their areas = 130π cm2πr12+ πr22=130πr12+ r22=130
Putting the value of r2, from(i) we get,
r12+14-r12=130r12+196+r12-28r1=1302r12-28r1+66=0r12-14r1+33=0r12-11r1-3r1+33=0r1r1-11-3r1-11=0r1-11r1-3=0r1-11=0 or r1-3=0r1=3,11

Hence, the radii of the circles are 11 cm and 3 cm.
