Let O be the center of S1 and S2. We have drawn a perpendicular S2Q at Q on S1P.

We can see that path difference of waves from S1 and S2 reaching at P is Δx=S1Q.

As D>>λ,

POS2=PS2A=AS1P=θ

In ΔAS1P

So, cosθ=Dx2+D2

So, the path difference at point P is

Δx=S1Q=S1S2cosθ=2λDx2+D2
