Two coils are placed close to each other. Then the mutual inductance of the pair of coils depends upon ____
the relative position and orientation of the two coils.
Mutual Induction is the phenomenon of an emf being induced in one coil in response to current changing in another coil.
When an emf is produced in a coil because of the change in current in a coupled coil, the effect is called mutual inductance. The emf is described by Faraday's law and it's direction is always to oppose the change in the magnetic field produced in it by the coupled coil.
If one coil is positioned next to the other coil, so that their physical distance is small, then nearly all of the magnetic flux generated by the first coil will interact with the turns of the second coil inducing a relatively large emf and therefore producing a large mutual inductance value.
