Question

Two concentric circular coils X and Y of radii 16 cm and 10 cm respectively lie in same vertical plane containing the north-south direction. Coil X has 20 turns and carries a current of 16 A, coil Y has 25 turns and carries a current of 18 A. The sense of current in X is anticlockwise and in coil Y it is clockwise, for an observer looking at the coils, facing the west.

Solution

The correct option is B 5π×104 T towards the west
Using right-hand thumb rule the direction of magnetic field due to coil X and Y is shown in figure below as Bx and By.

So, the magnetic field due to coil X at the centre is given by

Bx=μ0nxi12rx

Bx=(4π×107)×20×162×(16×102)

Bx=4π×104 T (Towards east)

Similarly, the magnetic field at common centre due to coil Y,

By=μ0nyi22ry

By=(4π×107)×25×182×(10×102)

By=9π×104 T (Towards west)

So, net magnetic field at the common centre is

Bnet=ByBx (By>Bx)

Bnet=(9π×104)(4π×104)

Bnet=5π×104 T (Towards west)

Hence, option (b) is correct.

Tip: In such problems always observe the plane in which circular wire is placed. Then by using right-hand thumb rule, curl your right hand along the direction of current and thumb will point the direction of magnetic field at centre (perpendicular to plane of wire).
