Question

Two elements A and B form compounds having molecular formula AB2 and AB4. When dissolved in 20 g C6H6, 1 g of AB2 lowers the f.pt. by 2.3oC whereas 1.0 g of AB4 lowers it by 1.3oC. The Kf for C6H6 is 5.1 K mol1kg. Calculate atomic masses of A and B.

Solution

The correct option is B a=25.59, b=42.64
ΔT=1000×Kf×wm×W
For AB2:2.3=1000×5.1×1m1×20
m1=110.86 ....(i)
For AB4:1.3=1000×5.1×1m2×20
m2=196.15 .....(ii)
Let atomic mass of A and B are a and b respectively.
a+2b=m1=110.86
a+4b=m2=196.15
a=25.59 and b=42.64
