Question

Two elements A and B form ideal compounds of formula AB2 and AB4. When dissolved in 20.0 g of benzene 1.0 g of AB2 lowers freezing point by 2.30C whereas 1.0 g of AB4 lowers freezing point by 1.30C. The Kf for benzene is 5.4. The atomic masses of A and B are:

Solution

The correct option is A 27,45
ΔTf=Kfm
For AB2,
2.3=5.4×1(M.ωt)1×100020
(M.ωt)1=50×5.42.3
(M.ωt)1=117.39MA+2MB=117 (1)
Now for AB4,
1.3=5.4×1(M.ωt)2×100020
(M.ωt)2=5.4×501.3=207
So MA+4MB=207 (2)
Now (2)(1)
2MB=90

Put in eq(1),
MB=45

MA=27
