Question

Two flask of equal volume have been joined by a narrow tub of negligible volume. Initially both flasks are at 300 K containing 0.60 mole of O2 gas at 0.5 atm pressure. One of the flask is then placed in a thermostat at 600 K. Calculate final pressure and the number of O2 gas in each flask.

Solution

PV=nRT
0.5×V=0.6×R×300
V=360R

In 2nd case, the pressure will be same
Flask 1: PV=aRT
P(360R)=aR(300)
a=1.2P
Flask 2: PV=bRT
P(360R)=bR(600)
b=0.6P
a+b=1.2P+0.6P=1.8P=0.6
P=0.33
a=0.396,b=0.198 .
