Let the forces be F1 and F2 in both the cases.
In the first case when they are acting in the same direction the net force will be F1 +F2.
In the second case when the forces are acting in the opposite direction, the net force will be F1 -F2 or F2 -F1 (Greater in magnitude-Lesser in magnitude)
