1. Let the forces be $F_1$ and $F_2$ in both the cases.
2. In the first case when they are acting in the same direction the net force will be $F_1$ +$F_2$.
3. In the second case when the forces are acting in the opposite direction, the net force will be $F_1$ -$F_2$ or $F_2$ -$F_1$ (Greater in magnitude-Lesser in magnitude)
